There is an innate impulse that drives us to draw faces. As children, we tirelessly draw our family and friends. It sometimes seems like a mnemonic exercise designed to prevent us from forgetting their faces. Being portrayed is a tribute, an honor that places us as beings worthy of remembrance. Just as Emperor Augustus wanted a portrait of himself in every corner of his territory, we distribute images of our loved ones as a form of worship and honor. It’s unnecessary to delve into details for the drawing to resemble the portrayed; a couple of hints are enough for us to quickly guess who they are. Pedro’s large glasses, the straw hat worn by Grandpa in summer, Lucia’s side braid…

The collective exhibition New Portraits is part of an exhibition series inaugurated in 2022 with the intention of revisiting traditional genres of painting through a contemporary lens. The portrait now takes center stage, taking over from landscape painting – addressed in New Landscapes – and still life – Floralia. The exhibition will take place at the Josep Bertrand 3 venue in Turó Park and will be open to the public from February 15th.
