Lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark

Sune Christiansen has developed a signature approach to figurative abstraction that is as ambiguous and suggestive as it is playful and inviting. His compositions often begin as digital sketches made on an iPad which serve as loose frameworks that allow for open interpretation rather than strict adherence. Once an arrangement of forms has been loosely identified on the canvas, Christiansen begins responding to these preliminary drawings by focusing on materiality and his visual sensation. Embracing the accidental, his gestural marks, layered textures, and exposed canvas transform into figures that seem both ancient and immediate, suggesting hieroglyphic codes, ritual gestures, and archetypal relationships. While avoiding didacticism, his work evokes broad themes of power, intimacy, and symbolism, imbuing his paintings with raw sincerity. Working mainly with oil stick, pastel, acrylics and industrial enamel paints, the artist deftly modulates texture, density and speed as he plots figures and objects in a manner that shows a clear dialogue between his own work and the likes of Kathrine Bradford, Eddie Martinez, Tal R and Sebastian Helling.

Born in 1976, Sune Christiansen is a self-taught artist based in Copenhagen, Denmark. His multidisciplinary approach spans painting, ceramics, and graphic works, with a growing international presence. He has held solo exhibitions at Bricks Gallery (Copenhagen), Alzueta Gallery (Barcelona and Madrid), Pt.2 Gallery (Oakland), and Albert Contemporary (Odense), and participated in leading fairs including NADA Miami, KIAF Seoul, Art Rotterdam, and Enter Art Fair. Christiansen’s work has also featured in major group exhibitions and is increasingly represented in private and institutional collections across Europe and North America.
