About

Live and work in Mallorca, Spain

Maite y Manuel are a duo of painters whose work oscillates between figuration and abstract expressionism. Their drawings and paintings are inhabited by anthropomorphic creatures that occupy them as if they were characters in a comic book or an animated series, narrating fragments of lives and emotions. The artists define their pictorial work as “an aggressive but innocent fight, similar to free jazz”. With anxious gestures and a certain sense of urgency they are drawn to exploring dualities: accident vs intention, abstraction vs figuration, chaos vs order, darkness vs lightness, Maite vs Manuel. The resulting works convey a sense of emotional immediacy through both their illustrative quality and the artists’ willingness to embrace flaws as an integral part of the process and the final outcome. They are an invitation to participate of the artistic duo’s personal and symbolic imagery.

Maite Garcia Argul (1996) and Manuel Puig (1991), originally from Uruguay, currently live in Mallorca (Spain). Both have a background in design. In 2019 they created Gabinete Exquisito, a character design studio based in Barcelona. Their most recent work has been exhibited internationally in shows and art fairs such as Art Cologne or Untiled Art Miami.
