The sculptural practice of Laurent Martin “Lo” explores the physical, emotional, and spiritual possibilities of bamboo. With a creative process rooted in his deep material knowledge and intuitive experimentation, “Lo” creates kinetic structures suspended in space, drawn by gravity, tension, and breath. His artistic palette draws from bamboo’s physical and sensorial virtues, its sophisticated organic structure, energy, and spirituality. Each piece is the result of a tactile dialogue with the material: bamboo is split, shaped, and guided over months to assume its final form. His structures curve gracefully in the air, embodying a fragile harmony achieved through opposites: flexibility and strength, fullness and void, light and shadow, movement and stillness. Ceramic spheres often act as counterpoints, grounding the aerial forms like planetary bodies. In his hands, bamboo becomes a language of equilibrium and energy, a sculptural thread between the earth and the cosmos.

Born in Paris and trained at ENSAD, Laurent Martin “Lo” worked for decades in advertising and fashion before a chance encounter with bamboo transformed his life and artistic trajectory. In 2004, he left everything behind to begin a nomadic journey along what he calls the “bamboo belt”, an imaginary terrestrial parallel around the tropics that, through bamboo, unites diverse cultures across the Americas to Asia. Through long stays with local communities and collaborations with architects and artisans, “Lo” absorbed ancestral techniques and philosophies surrounding bamboo, approaching it not only as a material but as a living medium. Today, he lives and works in L’Empordà and exhibits internationally. His work has been presented at major institutions and fairs like Art Basel Hong Kong, Frieze Seoul, and Art Paris, and is part of important public and private collections such as M+ Museum (Hong Kong), Koo House (Korea), and Fundació Vila Casas (Barcelona).
