Alexander Wertheim’s work emerges from the tension between order and intuition, between the impulse of the gesture and the logic of the pattern. His paintings are built on the idea that the world is made of opposing forces, parallel and perpendicular, fluid and fixed, and that art can be a space where these contradictions coexist. Each piece is an attempt to bring fragments into coherence, to transform movement into structure without erasing its origin. In his studio, the process unfolds like a long improvisation. Patterns are rehearsed, repeated, and subtly altered over time, allowing the painting to evolve at its own rhythm. Color functions less as shape and more as tone: a presence that moves across the canvas, shaped by the gestures that carry it. Wertheim’s practice embraces fallibility and precision alike, insisting that what is most human lies not in control, but in the ongoing negotiation between freedom and form.
Born in 1995 in Wertheim, Germany, Alexander Wertheim studied at the Universität der Künste Berlin, and spent a formative year at Hunter College in New York. He currently lives and works between Berlin and London. In recent years, his work has been presented in solo exhibitions at König Galerie and Schlachter 151 in Berlin, as well as Saenger Galería in Mexico City. His participation in prominent group shows, including Salón ACME in Mexico, «Under Forty» at Casa Siza, and «Salon der Gegenwart» in Hamburg, reflects a growing international recognition. Across these varied contexts, his practice continues to deepen a painterly language that merges process, rhythm, and structural inquiry.
