Bamboo Planet: Laurent Martin “Lo” at Museo Evaristo Valle

We’re thrilled to announce Bamboo Planet, a major institutional solo exhibition by Laurent Martin “Lo”, now on view from July 6 through September 28, 2025 at the Museo Evaristo Valle in Gijón, Spain.
Spread across the two floors of the museum’s historic palacete and into its lush Historic Gardens, Bamboo Planet is an immersive journey into the poetic world of “Lo,” where sculpture becomes a living dialogue between material, space, and cosmic balance.
Laurent Martin “Lo” (Paris, 1955) is not simply a sculptor—he is, as exhibition curator Sana López Abellán writes, a “bamboo lover.” His practice began not with an intention to make art, but with a moment of discovery. While working on an interior architecture project in Barcelona, he encountered bamboo—a material whose elegance, strength, and resilience sparked a profound shift in his life and creative direction. Since then, he has followed its trail across continents, from the rainforests of Asia to Latin America, learning from local masters and engaging with bamboo as both a structural medium and a spiritual force.
In this exhibition, “Lo” moves beyond the earthly to explore bamboo as a cosmic axis. He invites us to see this humble material not merely as organic matter, but as a guidepost—a vertical line pointing skyward. The works in Bamboo Planet embrace this vision: at their core lies a kinetic centerpiece that slowly rotates, like a telescope, in quiet search of constellations. It is a planetarium made of fibre and air, simplicity and suspension, strength and stillness.
At the heart of “Lo’s” process are the seven virtues of bamboo: spirituality, lightness, equilibrium, flexibility, sensuality, strength, and energy. These values shape not only his sculptural language, but his entire artistic philosophy. For him, bamboo is alive—it bends without breaking, it grows upward with determination, and it reminds us that true balance is not static, but fluid and dynamic.
This new exhibition combines iconic retrospective works with pieces that mark a bold new chapter in the artist’s practice. The result is an experience both grounded and celestial—an invitation to slow down, breathe, and see the universe through the rhythmic tension of a material in perfect dialogue with nature.
We warmly invite you to experience Bamboo Planet in person this summer and discover a body of work that speaks softly but carries great resonance—like the sound of wind through bamboo.
